The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, Book 1)

The Darkest Night - Gena Showalter I must admit that when I first started reading this novel, I absolutely hated it. I just could not get into this book. So I put it down, as cutie would say, in the time out corner for a few days.I then decided to start over. After all, this book is highly rated by Goodreads reviewers. Everyone seems to love it. Well – I am glad I gave this book a second chance. Once I got over my initial confusion, I really could not put the book down. The Darkest Night is the story of a group of warrior/brothers who live together outside Budapest. They are each possessed by a different demon. They are benevolent towards the townspeople and are referred to as angels by the locals. The warriors are hunted by a group of Hunters who are identified by a small tattoo on their wrists. There is so much that I loved about this book. I enjoyed how the brothers interacted with each other. They genuinely did care about each others’ well being, yet could attack each other just as easily due to the demons they housed. I liked how the author took elements of Greek mythology and wove those elements into her story. Ashlyn’s character was so sweet and innocent. She is also tormented, hearing voices of past conversations no matter where she is. When she meets Maddox, she is instantly attracted to him, and to the sudden silence around her. Maddox is also attracted, but remains suspicious. Their relationship is beautiful, hot, and steamy. The love scenes are beautiful, but a little odd as the two characters often speak like cavemen – in one word sentences. Actually, Maddox kind of reminds me a little of a caveman, in his possessiveness over Ashlyn. I can’t wait to read the next book. Lucien and Anya’s story sounds interesting!
