Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)

Angelfall - Susan Ee **Re-read 8/5/11 - Even better the second time**Imagine a post-apocalyptic world devastated by angels. Our cities lie in ruins, our technology smashed on the road. People are killed by the angels of the apocalypse; those that survive have very limited resources. Gangs roam in the daylight, angels and other paranormal creatures rule the night. This is Penryn’s world. Penryn is a 17 year old girl struggling to survive. Her little sister Paige is crippled and confined to a wheelchair. Her mother suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. Penryn and her family watch a group of angels attempt to execute one of their kind. They are spotted and in the confusion, her sister is nabbed and taken away. Penryn grabs the injured angel and his wings and vows to use him to find her sister.Told from Penryn’s point of view, the reader learns a lot about her character. She is loyal, resourceful, brave, and scrappy. Penryn cares deeply for her family and will do all possible to get her sister back. I loved Raffe’s character. Clearly, he is an angel with a lot of power and influence. I liked how he held back and seemed to humor Penryn at first. His speech seemed a little arrogant at times but he hadn’t had to deal with a girl like Penryn before. I loved the banter between these two characters. It made me smile. This is not a love story. Love between a human and an angel is strictly forbidden. It is more the story of two companions journeying through the devastation of what was once the Silicon Valley to San Francisco. On their way they encounter a human resistance camp where the humans are plotting to take back their world. There is also an element of horror in this book. Some very strange and scary things are going on at the angels’ aerie. I really enjoyed this book. I did feel that there were a few things that could have been expanded upon, for example the reason why the angels attacked the earth. I found the ending a little abrupt, but it only made me want to read the next installment of this series.Overall, a good read and an interesting take on angels. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out. Great debut novel - can't wait for the next book!*I won a copy of this book from the author.* 9/6/11 - Author Susan Ee interviewed on Badass Book Reviews
