Cold Fire (Spiritwalker Trilogy #2)

Cold Fire (Spiritwalker Trilogy #2) - Kate Elliott Second part definitely better than the first. 3 stars.Note: May contain possible spoilers from Book 1 – Cold MagicWhen I requested this book from Netgalley, I was not aware that it was the second book in a series. I figured that I could catch up and jump into the story. Well, yes and no. I would highly recommend that you read Cold Magic prior to reading this book, just to get a handle on this complex world. This book has a lot going on. It’s chock-full of paranormal creatures: dragons, trolls, goblins, shifters, even a form of zombies. There are also some steampunk elements such as automatons and airships. This is also a world of magic with cold mages and fire mages. Cold Fire has a huge cast of characters although the main story revolves around Cat, a young woman in a “chained” marriage that has not been consummated. Cat is looking for a way to annul her marriage to Vai. Interestingly enough, when she does meet Vai again, at the opposite side of the earth in the Antilles, Vai does all that he can to convince Cat that she should be with him. He is very convincing and Vai is one of the nicest characters in the book. I think I fell in love with him. Kate Elliot is a talented writer. Her portrayal of the spirit world had a dreamy, almost psychedelic quality. One of my favorite passages involved the personification of a hurricane as an Angry Queen:The spirit of the hurricane was a woman, a vast looming face with a brow of thunderclouds and a mouth of lightning. The curve of her arms was a tearing circle of howling winds.I’ll have to get myself a copy of Cold Magic before the release of the next book Cold Steel in September 2012. Note: The author’s website includes a special bonus chapter to be read after chapter 31. She calls it Chapter 31.5. Here’s the linkThank you Netgalley and Orbit for a review copy of this book.Review posted on Badass Book Reviews
