This is part of a joint review over at http://badassbookreviews.com
Overall: I did find the beginning a little confusing. For example, I would have never thought that vampires would be slaves to humans. For me, vampires are always at the top of the food chain. I actually stopped reading the book, put it down for a week or so, then came back to it.
Characters: I just could not get into Riker. He was a bit of an ass for most of the book, and understandably so. I couldn’t really relate to Nicole that much, she was OK for me. That being said, these two characters together had some nice chemistry. I loved Lucy. It was kind of sweet seeing such a simple character that only wanted candy. Poor Bastien. What a horrible way to grow up. I think that Hunter will be the character to watch in future installments of this series.
Plot: I found it awfully slow at the beginning, but you are right, the pacing went from 0 to manic quite rapidly. I just felt that the plot was not that different from other vampire stories out there and I kept thinking that it felt a little like the Black Dagger Brotherhood. One thing that the author does well is the love scenes. Oh baby, I needed a cold shower after some of those scenes.
Thank you to Edelweiss and Simon & Shuster for a review copy of this book.
